Architect Lead / Manager

Tata Consultancy Services

Ten years at Tata Consultancy Services, growing from lead developer on a US telecoms platform to Lead Solution Architect for Saudi Arabian Airlines' enterprise-wide integration and architect on British Airways' Travel Programme — and leading TCS's airline innovation lab, whose demonstrations were used by British Airways, KLM and SITA.

Context

I joined TCS in 2001 as a developer and spent ten years growing into an architect — first in US telecoms, then across some of the world's best-known airlines.

Airlines ran on a tangle of custom messaging, middleware and industry protocols. The work was to replace that complexity with standard, service-oriented integration that cut the cost of ownership and let airlines launch new products faster.

Role & scope

Progression
Lead Developer → Technical Lead → Lead Integration Designer → Solution Architect → Lead Solution Architect → Architect, British Airways
Clients
Qwest, British Airways, SITA, Singapore Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines
Innovation
Led the TCS airline innovation lab; demonstrations used by British Airways, KLM and SITA
Pre-sales
Pre-sales and RFP responses for $3M–$25M opportunities, contributing to $50M in wins
Integration
IBM integration suite (Saudia), Progress (BA Travel Programme), WSO2 (BA SOA governance); airline schedule messaging; Amadeus and Sabre
Delivery
Coordinated client, onsite and offshore teams; liaised with product vendors

Milestones

  1. Mar 2001 – Nov 2004

Lead Developer — Qwest (US telecoms)

Built the Instant Activation module and web services for a Customer Request Management platform, migrated ColdFusion pages to J2EE on WebLogic with Struts, and coordinated client, onsite and offshore teams.

  2. May 2004 – May 2005

    Technical Lead — British Airways

Technical lead across multiple British Airways projects.

  3. Jun 2005 – Apr 2006

    Lead Integration Designer — SITA

  4. May 2006 – Sep 2007

    Solution Architect — Singapore Airlines

  5. Oct – Dec 2007

    Enterprise Consultant — Hawaiian Airlines

  6. Dec 2007 – Apr 2009

Lead Solution Architect — Saudi Arabian Airlines

Architected the ESB platform on the IBM integration suite, integrating all of Saudia's applications: 112 systems, including Amadeus and Sabre, in a $25M programme.

  7. Late 2008

Led the TCS airline innovation lab

Built demonstrations of airline capabilities, used by British Airways, KLM and SITA.

  8. May 2010 – Feb 2011

Architect — British Airways Travel Programme

Messaging and integration architecture for a major business and IT transformation of BA's most critical operational systems.

Key achievements

One integration platform for an entire airline

Challenge
Saudia ran a plethora of custom messaging and middleware platforms on legacy and home-grown protocols — costly to maintain year on year, and a brake on integrating new systems and launching new products.
Approach
Identified the right SOA product suite (IBM), produced the reference architecture and functional design, and architected an ESB-based solution integrating all of Saudia's applications — including a scheduling application to parse complex MVT, ASM and SSM airline messages. Liaised with the product vendor and supported construction.
Outcome
A $25M programme integrating 112 systems, including Amadeus and Sabre — the foundation for a lower cost of ownership and a phased move to SOA and business process management.

An airline innovation lab

Challenge
Airlines and their advisers wanted to see new capabilities working before investing in them.
Approach
Led the TCS airline innovation lab, building demonstrations of airline capabilities.
Outcome
Demonstrations used by British Airways, KLM and SITA.

Messaging architecture for BA's Travel Programme

Challenge
British Airways' Travel Programme was replacing and modernising some of its most critical business and operational systems — and they all had to talk to each other reliably.
Approach
Set the publish/subscribe strategy for messages across BA's integration architecture; designed the messaging deployment, identifying active-active and active-passive use cases; established message patterns ratified by the technical working group; produced the reference architecture on Progress; and built a simple/medium/complex estimation model.

SOA governance for British Airways

Challenge
BA was rolling out SOA across its core operations, and every new business service needed governing from concept to production.
Approach
Designed and implemented design-time governance on WSO2: the service development lifecycle, versioning strategy, deployment architecture and capacity tuning, and integration with the Service Delivery Platform. Liaised with the vendor and embedded process governance in the service repository.

Hands-on engineering at Qwest

Challenge
Wholesale service delivery centres needed a single point of contact to track service requests through ordering, provisioning and billing.
Approach
As Lead Developer, built the Instant Activation module and the web services other systems used to reach the Customer Request Management platform, and migrated ColdFusion pages to J2EE on WebLogic with Struts.

Pre-sales that won work

Challenge
Large integration opportunities needed credible solutions and sizing.
Approach
Supported pre-sales and RFP responses for opportunities worth $3M to $25M, and defined delivery methods and reusable architecture standards across client engagements.
Outcome
Contributed to wins worth $50M.

Highlights

  • Lead Solution Architect for Saudi Arabian Airlines: an ESB platform on the IBM integration suite, integrating 112 systems including Amadeus and Sabre, in a $25M programme.
  • Architect for British Airways' Travel Programme (TTP) messaging architecture on Progress, and for SOA governance on WSO2.
  • Led the TCS airline innovation lab; its demonstrations were used by British Airways, KLM and SITA.
  • Progressed from Lead Developer to Lead Solution Architect over ten years, across Qwest, British Airways, SITA, Singapore Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines.
  • Supported pre-sales for opportunities worth $3M to $25M, contributing to wins worth $50M.

How I led

  • Learn the craft first: years of hands-on development before designing for others.
  • Coordinate as one team across client, onsite and offshore locations.
  • Make vendors partners in the solution, not just suppliers of a product.
